Digital kidney pathology

PITHIA is developing software to help pathologists assess donor kidney biopsies.

This software uses AI to suggest structures and tissue regions on scanned biopsy images. Pathologists can compare the suggestions with the original slide instead of marking every area from scratch.

The project is led by Gavin Pettigrew and Tobi Ayorinde and continues the work of the UK PITHIA trial.

How the software works

Magnified kidney biopsy showing three rounded glomeruli among surrounding tubules.
The model has outlined three glomeruli in this PAS-stained kidney biopsy.

Why are biopsies needed?

A biopsy can reveal lasting damage in a kidney that is not apparent from its outward appearance or the donor’s medical history. This information can help a transplant team assess a kidney before transplantation.

Preparing and examining a biopsy takes time. Our current work uses software and AI to make specialist examination of biopsy slides faster and more accessible.

How you can help

We are preparing the tools for testing with pathologists, transplant clinicians and researchers. We need feedback on the model outputs and on how well the software fits the work of reviewing a biopsy.
